How to Get Media Exposure

by Janet

Starting your own organizing business is an exciting adventure, but before you can become successful, you need to let as many people as possible know that you exist. Until you have money coming in, you may be reluctant to invest in advertising, but that’s probably a good thing, as paid ads are rarely cost-effective for service businesses. You can reach a larger audience in a much more powerful way by getting your business mentioned on TV or radio, or in newspapers, magazines, or other publications. And the best part is, it won’t cost you a small fortune!

Being the organized professional that you are, I’m sure you’ve started a list or database of potential clients who have inquired about your services, other entrepreneurs you’ve met at networking events, names you’ve collected at trade shows and speaking engagements, and other contacts. It’s great to have that information on file, but your business will benefit much more if you have a system in place for staying in touch with them on a regular basis.

With that in mind, I’m made a few enhancements to the site, and you are warmly invited to get involved.

For many organizing clients, books are one of the hardest things to part with. Story books are often associated with childhood memories; they might want to read their favorite novels again someday; and they just never know when they might need to look something up in one of those non-fiction books! You can use your skills as a professional organizer to help them see the benefits of letting go, and to guide them through the decision-making process, but then what? What to do with all those books?!?

Do you get frustrated when a client struggles with an organizing system that works perfectly well for other clients? As a professional organizer, one of the most important things you can learn is that there’s no such thing as “one size fits all” when it comes to organizing! Every person views the world through different eyes, and you need to understand your clients’ uniqueness before you can create solutions that will help them to get and stay organized.

In a recent post, Are You in it for the Long Haul?, I mentioned several actions you can take to ensure the future success of your business, one of which was joining one or more networking groups. Many of the organizers I speak to who are struggling do not attend networking events, but if you ask several successful organizers where they find clients, the majority of them will tell you that live networking is their most important source of leads. When you provide a service, people are much more likely to do business with you or recommend you to others once they’ve had a chance to get to know you.
