2014 Blogging Trends

Social Media Examiner recently published their 2014 Social Media Marketing Industry Report, after surveying nearly 2900 marketers. I know how busy you are, so for your convenience, I’ve captured the highlights of their findings specific to blogging.

  1. 43% of the survey participants who blog reported that their blog is optimized for mobile devices. The percentage of business-to-business (B2B) marketers was somewhat higher than that of business-to-consumer (B2C).
  2. Blogging is used by 55% of the participants, making it the 5th most popular social media platform. On the other hand, when they were asked to identify which platform was most important for their business, blogging was the #4 choice – #3 for B2C marketers.
  3. 62% of self-employed marketers use blogging, as compared to 50% of large businesses. 64% of B2B marketers use blogging, as compared to 50% of B2C marketers.
  4. The use of blogging increases, the longer someone has been using social media for marketing. Specifically, 43% of those with less than 12 months’ experience are blogging, but this jumps to 71% for those with over five years’ experience.
  5. 68% of marketers plan to increase their use of blogging in the near future, making it by far the #1 area of increased activity.
  6. 27% of marketers outsource some of their social media marketing activities, with the top two areas being design/development and content creation.
  7. 94% of marketers use original written content as part of their marketing efforts, and 58% identified this as the most important form of content for their business. 81% plan to increase their use of original written content in the near future.

If you’re thinking about starting a blog, increasing your use of blogging, or outsourcing some of your blogging activities, schedule a one-on-one strategy session and I’ll answer your questions and help you achieve your marketing goals.

Some interesting figures here Janet. I admit I am a little surprised at the fact that not ALL are using original content – I thought that was something everyone now realised was necessary! What really surprises me is that only half of big businesses are blogging – every business regardless of size should be blogging!

I see a lot of people on Twitter who don’t seem to do anything but retweet others. I’m not sure how well that’s working for them though…

Some solopreneurs may lack the resources (time, expertise, or money to pay someone to write for them) but big businesses have no excuse for not blogging!
