“Going Forward: Downsizing, Moving and Settling In” by Moreen Torpy

It’s exciting to see so many professional organizers writing their own books! I’ve previously reviewed Linda Samuels’ The Other Side of Organized, Hellen Buttigieg’s Organizing Outside the Box, Debbie Stanley’s Ethical Pitfalls for Professional Organizers, and Anne Blumer’s Get Rich Organizing, and today I’m pleased to share Moreen Torpy’s Going Forward: Downsizing, Moving and Settling In.

Moreen has been featured previously on Your Organizing Business as both a guest blogger and a participant in the Professional Organizers Blog Carnival, and I was honored to receive a PDF copy of her book last year. With regard to the lateness of my review, I have two excuses for procrastinating:

  1. I spend so much time on my laptop working and reading online content that when I sit down to read something meatier, I like to get away from my desk with either a printed book or my Kobo. I recently learned how to put PDFs on my Kobo, and was pleased to finally have a chance to explore Moreen’s book. (Note: it is available for the Kindle.)
  2. Having been involved with downsizing and moving for myself, family members, friends, and clients, I assumed that there wouldn’t be much in it that I didn’t already know. I was so wrong!

Moreen’s book is full of practical tips for dealing with not only the physical aspects of moving, but the emotional ones that often go along with them – information that would certainly have been useful to me in my past endeavors! Yes, some of it confirmed things I’ve learned along the way, but there were lots of new ideas as well, which I expect to refer to again in the future.

In addition, Moreen provides a number of downloadable worksheets for evaluating, planning and organizing such details as priorities, values, goals, downsizing, and packing, as well as a fabulous 25-page “Ultimate Moving Checklist.”

Although it was written as a guide for individuals who are downsizing either their own homes or that of a loved one, Going Forward: Downsizing, Moving and Settling In would also be a valuable resource for professional organizers helping clients with these same issues and a great addition to your personal library.
