The Benefits of Blog Carnivals

I’m just thrilled to see the growing numbers of participants in the Professional Organizers Blog Carnival! I recently noticed that Tracy Hoth, who is one of the Professional Organizers Blog Carnival Star Bloggers, regularly participates in other blogging events as well, so I’ve asked her to explain how she got involved and why she considers it a valuable activity. Welcome, Tracy!

I sat across from another professional organizer who was in the Kansas City area and had called me to meet with her. We agreed on a Saturday morning breakfast at a popular restaurant. She could write off her trip (or some of it), we could meet, make a connection and share information on a topic that we were both passionate about… organizing!

I left the meeting with the notes I had taken in my hand. At the top of the list was to check out Janet Barclay’s Professional Organizers Blog Carnival. The other organizer said it was a must do! That is how I started my first blog carnival.

As a blogger who struggles keeping up with my blogging amidst my regular business duties (clients, speaking, coaching, etc.), my family (a wonderful husband and four active kids) and other necessary responsibilities – laundry, cooking, exercising, volunteering, sleeping – I thought being a part of a blog carnival was a beneficial endeavor for the following reasons:

  1. Each month the blog carnival would give me a topic to write on which would decrease my having to think one
  2. I would be challenged – possibly – to write on a topic I wouldn’t normally choose
  3. Writing each month would keep my blog current – at least monthly
  4. It would help my readers get more information and content by going to the carnival and reading other professional organizers’ posts
  5. It would give me the appearance of an “expert” – one who is involved in something bigger in the area of their expertise
  6. I could “meet” other professional organizers by reading their posts
  7. I could make connections, possibly grow relationships and grow “name recognition” among colleagues
  8. And, then, who knows what other opportunities could arise…

A few months ago I was contacted by a local Kansas City blogger and asked to be a part of a new blog carnival that she was starting with Kansas City bloggers. I thought through the benefits I listed above. All of them applied to this opportunity as well. In addition, I thought it would be an opportunity to reach new readers in the Kansas City metro which could turn into potential organizing clients.

What I learned next was another benefit I hadn’t thought about… SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Judy Widener, from The Carnival of Well-Being, set up the carnival so each participant posted the entire carnival, with links, on our own blogs. In response to a question I had about what a “pingback” was my webmaster complimented me on my blog carnival. I quickly informed her that it was nothing I did! She said that linking in this way is very beneficial to your SEO.

She also suggested that when linking you should highlight and link the key words. For example, instead of “click here” and linking those words you should say “check out Janet Barclay’s Professional Organizers Blog Carnival” and link to that!

Here are some simple action steps you can take:

  • Join Janet Barclay’s blog carnival for professional organizers, if you haven’t already.
  • Link using key words/phrases instead of “click here.”
  • Search ‘blog carnival’ to see if there are other carnivals that you think would be beneficial to your business.
  • I just learned of a Kansas City bloggers group on Facebook (#blogkc). Is there a group like this in your area?

And then, who knows what other opportunities could arise… Happy Blogging!
