As professional organizers, our task of making any room look amazing can be limited substantially by the space we have to work with. This is certainly the case with most garages. Fortunately, there is a huge selection of garage storage options that will fit your customer’s needs.

Like most organizing jobs, when you’re organizing a garage, try to get an idea of the contents before presenting products to your customer. On a slim budget, a few heavy-duty steel floor racks with some plastic bins will help store 90% of the contents of most garages.

If your client is looking for a super custom cabinet setup, there are plenty of closet companies that offer amazing complete cabinet solutions with steel or acrylic doors, easy slide drawers and other custom features you would expect to find in high end kitchens. Whatever their budget, here’s a list of options that will give your client an incredible end result.

1. Wall-Mounted Shelving Units

Wall-mounted shelving units are an excellent way to maximize storage by utilizing vertical wall space. Look for sturdy and adjustable shelves that can accommodate tools, boxes, and sports equipment of various sizes. These shelves can be attached to the wall using screws, just like kitchen and bathroom cabinets are installed.

2. Opt for Overhead Storage Racks

Ideal for those with an abundance of items in their garage, overhead storage racks make the most of vertical space, even when a car is parked. Ensure that the mounting screws are securely anchored into ceiling studs to prevent any damage to your vehicle.

3. Consider Pegboards

Pegboards provide a practical solution for organizing tools while keeping them visible and easily accessible. These boards feature a grid of holes where you can insert hooks, pegs, and attachments to hang and arrange tools, gardening equipment, and small items.

4. Use Stackable Storage Bins

When organizing smaller items like nuts, bolts, and screws, stackable plastic storage bins are a great choice. Clear bins work well for lightweight items, while the HDX line of black bins with yellow lids from Home Depot provides durability for heavier storage needs.

5. Install Magnetic Tool Holders

Mount magnetic tool holders on the walls to keep frequently used hand tools within easy reach. They are particularly useful for organizing metal tools like wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers. Larger magnets can be attached to pegboards for mounting common metal tools.

6. Hang Heavy-Duty Hooks and Hangers

Opt for heavy-duty hooks that can securely support the weight of your items. Brands like Rubbermaid and Ryobi offer systems with different types of hooks to hang items ranging from rakes and brooms to large bicycles.

7. Invest in Standalone Storage Cabinets

If you have the budget and space, investing in cabinets and storage systems specifically designed for garages is an excellent solution. These cabinets provide closed storage, protecting your belongings from dust while offering a clean and organized appearance. Check out Seville Classics work benches and other garage storage solutions.

8. Consider Adding a Workbench

A workbench is a valuable addition to any garage, especially for those who spend time working on projects. Modern workbenches come with features like built-in electrical outlets, USB ports for charging tools and devices, overhead LED lights, stainless steel easy-glide doors, and lockable casters for mobility.

9. Utilize Tool Chests

Tool chests are essential for efficient storage in most garages. With drawers of various depths and sometimes a sliding or swinging door at the bottom for larger tools, they optimize space usage and are great for large power tools. Consider checking platforms like OfferUp or Facebook Marketplace for used tool chests in excellent condition if you’re looking to save on your garage transformation.

10. Install Wall-Mounted Cabinets

Similar to kitchen or bathroom cabinets, wall-mounted cabinets can be a great addition to your garage. These smaller square cabinets work well for storing automotive fluids and cleaning supplies.

Remember that the best garage organization products will depend on your specific needs, available space, and budget. Assess your garage’s requirements and plan the organization system accordingly. I recommend investing in reputable brands such as Kobalt, Seville Classics, or Husky, as garages endure harsh weather conditions.

Conclusion

The garage is the most often forgotten room in the house, typically the black hole where possessions end up when no other space in the home works. By utilizing a few storage options, your client’s garage will not only be more functional, it will be a space they’ll be proud of.

Hey, Kevin, fancy meeting you here! This is great advice, and it’s bittersweet, because I WISH I had a garage, as my car was stolen last Monday. Had it been in a garage, that would have been far less likely. 😉

I think my favorite item is the magnetic tool holder option. I love the orderliness magnets provide. But these are all excellent tips for keeping the multipurpose garage space tidy and productive.

    Hi Julie,
I’m sorry to hear about your car being stolen. I live 20 minutes from the vehicle left capital of the country so this is an all too common story from my clients. Glad you enjoyed the article, yes, magnetic tool holders are amazing!

What’s not to love about an organized garage? We live in a one-story house with no basement or attic. So as you can imagine, A LOT of ‘extra’ things get stored in the garage. We’ve done edits and organizing over the years, but we need to revisit it every so often to adjust. Recently, we redid some garage storage when doing an electrical upgrade for the house. My husband had custom storage floor-to-ceiling cabinets built to replace the open shelving. I’m so happy with them because it hides all the contents. So it’s much more pleasant to go into the garage. Next up, more editing!

I love all the solutions you shared, Kevin! I’m with Julie on the magnetic tool holder being a favorite.

It’s a good point, for many people the garage is just an afterthought. I once repurposed a bathroom pantry cabinet in a garage and it was really handy for storing small things!
